Another Marathoner in the Family

Amelia finished her final mile of her 26.2 as a part of the Marathon Kids program. Elementary school kids run or walk the total milage over a few months and keep track of their distance. The final lap is part of a regional celebration, and the kids who complete it receive a medal and a T-shirt for their efforts.

When she finished, she asked me, "Do I have to do this again next year?" and I answered, "No, it's up to you -- it's your choice."

Then she asked, "Will I still get the medal?"

"No, you have to go the miles to get the medal."

"Oh. Hmm, I have to think about it."

When we went to lunch to celebrate her afterwards, she placed her medal on the table in a very obvious way. She told the host, "I will sit here, where my Marathon Kids medal is. I earned that today." Peanut certainly has her eyes on the prize.
